American Legion Membership

 

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.

 

The American Legion's success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

 

Eligibility for American Legion membership is limited to those honorably discharged veterans and current personnel of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Air Force, who served at least one day of active duty during any of the following periods:

 

  • World War I - April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918

  • World War II - December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946

    • (U.S. Merchant Marine eligibility runs from December 7, 1941 to August 16, 1945)

  • Korea - June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955

  • Vietnam - February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975

  • Lebanon/Grenada - August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984

  • Panama - December 20, 1989 to January 30, 1990

  • Gulf Wars/War On Terrorism - August 2, 1990 to Present

    • (Continuing until cessation of hostilities as determined by the U.S. government. As such, open eligibility applies to all current active-duty service members).

American Legion Auxiliary Membership  - $25.00 (Jr. Auxiliary - $5.00) - Become part of the largest women's patriotic service organization in the world! We are the wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, granddaughters and great-granddaughters of veterans who served our great country during times of war. Sons of the American Legion Membership - $30.00  (Dual SAL - $5.00) - S.A.L. members include males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the U.S. military and were eligible for American Legion membership. Apply for membership at the post or print an application here.

 

American Legion Riders - American Legion Riders chapters are well known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children's hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded servicemembers and scholarships.
